Old Vaulty
/Material: Resin, Acrylic, Atomized Steel/
Created as part of a series of experimental designs, processes, and an excuse to try out my new airbrush, this helmet is one of five different designs created for my Senior Exhibition during my last month at California College of the Arts. The helmet was designed in Solidworks and then 3D printed. I made a latex mold and slush casted five in polyurethane resin.
This particular helmet’s paint job was based off of Fallout 4 aesthetic. The first layer of paint was airbrushed shades of rusty brown, before adding several different shades of blue as the top coat I sprayed a layer of hairspray to allow the paint to give a chipped away appearance using a toothpick. After that, and several oil washes later, atomized steel mixed with glue was applied to the chipped areas. After a few patina solutions and some added detail with acrylic paint and cinnamon, it gave off the perfect realistic rusty appearance I wanted.
